지금 이 순간 우리의 삶의 자세는 미래에 우리가 어떤 행동을 하게 될 지를 보여준다.
오늘 우리의 욕망을 꺽고 주님의 뜻에 복종시키고 있다면 우리는 내일도 똑같이 행동할 가능성이 높다.
지금 순교적인 자세로 사는 사람은 실제로 목숨을 잃게 되는 상황에 처할 때 당황하지 않는다.
평소에 자신을 부인하는 삶이 체질화되었기 때문이다.
지금 산 순교자로 사는 사람은 죽음을 통한 순교의 제물이 될 확률이 높다.
반면에 지금 자신을 부인하지 못하는 사람은 목숨을 빼앗기는 위협을 받을 때 여지없이 타협한다.
신학자 칼빈은 말한다.
“엄청난 가치를 지닌 진주이신 그리스도를 얻기 위해서 무익한 것보다
더 나쁜 자신을 잃는 것은 최고의 교환이다.”

The way we live now shows what actions we will take in the future.
If we deny our desires today and submit to the Lord's will,
we are likely to do the same tomorrow.
Those who live with a martyr’s attitude will not be surprised when faced with losing their life,
as they have made self-denial a habit.
Those who live as living martyrs are more likely to become martyrs in death.
In contrast, those who cannot deny themselves now will compromise when
threatened with death.
Theologian Calvin said,
"To lose a self that is worse than useless in order to gain Christ,
the pearl of great price, is the best of exchanges."
